One of AEM’s young leaders is among an elite group selected for a program that gives participants first-hand, high-level experience in the workings of the federal government.
Austin Ramirez, 38, president and CEO of HUSCO International in Waukesha, Wisconsin, has been appointed to the 2016-2017 class of White House Fellows by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. He also serves on the AEM Board of Directors.
Fellows spend a year working as a full-time, paid fellow to senior White House staff, cabinet secretaries and other top-ranking government officials.
They also take part in an education program designed to broaden their knowledge of leadership, policy formulation, and current affairs. Community service is another essential element of the program, and Fellows participate in service projects throughout their year in Washington, D.C.
“AEM congratulates Austin on this tremendous honor,” said AEM President Dennis Slater. “His appointment as a White House Fellow confirms the high level of leadership he has shown at HUSCO, in his community and while serving on our Board.”
Program Encourages Active Citizenship
The White House Fellows Program was created in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It is designed to encourage active citizenship and a lifelong commitment to service. Fellows come from diverse backgrounds and varied professions, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and leadership.
Selection as a White House Fellow is highly competitive and based on a record of professional achievement, evidence of leadership potential, and a proven commitment to public service. Each Fellow must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute meaningfully at senior levels of the federal government.
Throughout its history, the program has fostered leaders in many fields, including government, business, law, media, medicine, education, diplomacy, and the military.
